SECTION 1: RESIN – BASIC THEORY

1. What is Resin?

Resin is a liquid chemical material which becomes solid after mixing with a hardener. It is widely used in nail art, coating, casting, and decorative art work.

  • Example: Epoxy Resin

  • Important: Resin is a strong chemical and must be handled carefully.

2. Resin + Hardener

  • Resin cannot cure alone.

  • Mixing resin with hardener starts the curing process.

  • Common mixing ratios:

    • 1:1

    • 2:1
      (Always follow brand instructions.)

3. Resin Safety & Mould Life

  • Excess chemical usage reduces mould shell life.

  • Strong chemicals are harmful to skin and lungs.

  • Always use limited and correct quantity.

SECTION 2: TECHNIQUES IN RESIN

1. Coating Technique

  • Resin is applied in layers on a base surface.

  • Used for finishing and protection.

Base surfaces:

  • MDF board

  • Glass

  • Metal

Process:

  • Base coat application

  • Top coat (Resin + hardener mixture)

2. Casting Technique

  • Resin is poured into moulds.

  • Used when design or shape is required.

  • Silicone moulds are preferred.

Curing Time: 20–24 hours

SECTION 3: PIGMENTS

Types of Pigments (4 Types)

1. Opaque Pigment (Liquid)

  • Gives solid colour

  • Base layer is not visible

  • Commonly used on MDF boards

2. Pearl Pigment (Powder)

  • Transparent pigment with shimmer

  • Used in silicone mould work

  • Mostly used in first resin layer

3. Metallic Pigment

  • Translucent pigment

  • Gives metallic shine effect

4. Alcohol Ink

  • Liquid pigment

  • Used for abstract and fluid art designs

SECTION 4: RESIN SAFETY RULES (MANDATORY)

  1. Gloves are compulsory

  2. Wear apron or lab coat

  3. Hair must be tied properly

  4. Asthma patients, pregnant ladies & children are not allowed in resin area

  5. Use respiratory mask

  6. Do not work if hands are injured

  7. Resin work should not be done in open areas

  8. Proper ventilation is compulsory

  9. Work surface should be plastic-covered and smooth

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Nail Cleaning

  • Remove old nail polish using acetone and cotton

Step 2: Cuticle Work

  • Push cuticles upward using cuticle pusher

  • Cut excess cuticle skin carefully

Step 3: Nail Cutting & Shaping

  • Cut nails to required length

  • Shape nails (round shape preferred initially)

Step 4: Filing

  • 180 grit – smooth side

  • 100 grit – rough side

  • File nail surface gently

Step 5: Buffing

  • Remove natural nail shine using box buffer

Step 6: Dust Off

  • Clean nail dust completely

Step 7: Nail Dehydrator

  • Apply nail dehydrator to remove moisture

Step 8: Primer Application

  • Apply primer on natural nail

  • Let it air dry

Step 9: Builder Gel – First Coat

  • Apply thin layer of builder gel

  • Do not touch cuticle line

  • Cure under UV/LED lamp for 60 seconds

Step 10: Builder Gel – Second Coat

  • Apply second coat evenly

  • Cure again for 60 seconds

  • Third coat only if required

Step 11: Sticky Layer Removal

  • Clean sticky layer using nail cleanser spray

Step 12: Filing (3-Step Method)

  1. Cuticle area filing

  2. Centre nail filing

  3. Shape filing

Step 13: Buffing Again

  • Smooth surface using box buffer

Step 14: Dust Off

  • Clean nail again

Step 15: Nail Paint / Gel Polish

  • Apply gel polish

  • Cure for 60 seconds

  • Apply second coat if needed

SECTION 8: PROFESSIONAL TIPS FOR STUDENTS

  • Always apply thin gel layers

  • Never touch cuticle with gel

  • Cure properly to avoid lifting

  • Maintain hygiene and tool sanitation

  • Practice on nail tips before working on clients

  • Follow safety rules strictly
